Domestic Bliss

I am a strong, independent woman. I shun the "traditional" roles and believe women aren't the cooks and the cleaners and we shouldn't be "expected" to take care of our man.

At least, that's how I used to feel.

Don't get me wrong. I still believe all that, but something very strange has happened to me since I moved to San Antonio.

As I was walking up to my apartment this evening after work, I found myself thinking about what I was going to make for dinner. Tacos? Fettuccine? Spaghetti Pie? As I went to put my key into the lock, I froze and momentarily forgot who I was. Could I be the same person who not so long ago cowered in fear at the thought of a pot and a pan on the stove?

I giggled to myself as I realized that I have come to actually enjoy the domestic side of life. I don't believe that cooking and cleaning and taking care of "my man" makes me a weaker woman. On the contrary, I feel more confident, independent and secure than ever before. There's a huge feeling of satisfaction in holding down a 40-hour (or more) work week, making dinner 5-6 nights of the week and keeping a relatively clean house (I mean, come on - a leopard can't completely change her spots overnight, you know?). At least I can feel confident that, if someone showed up unannounced, I wouldn't be embarrassed to invite them into my apartment.

So, yes. I am a strong, independent, confident woman who has embraced the traditional roles. And, if you really think about it, who was really in charge in the traditional 50s household? Was it Ward or June Cleaver? . . . I rest my case.
